Pitstops, Masokut. Located in the north of the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia. These boats are the “cars” of the islands. They transport everything—water, food, and people—between villages across the islands.

The boats are built in a traditional artisanal style from a single trunk of tropical wood such as teak. The interior of the trunk is hollowed out, and a modern 25 HP motor is mounted at the front. Without primer or fiberglass, a boat lasts around five years in the tropical environment. Stable when still, but even more stable at speed.
